Abstract

In today’s world, the media constitute a powerful tool for the exchange of ideas and thoughts and conveying them to various audiences who, despite the distance, come together via the unifying nexus of the media. One of these media is satellite television which is also used by the Muslim world to introduce, promote and present Islam. Some satellite TV networks that were initially established to promote Islam have forgotten their original mission and have turned to internal Islamic debates with their co-religionists. Most of these conversations occur outside the guidelines and laws that have been labeled as proper debate in Islam. Islam has introduced certain guidelines for dialogue and debate. If today’s media adhere to these guidelines, they greatly help to resolve some differences. However, if they are ignored, debates and discussions will lead to nothing but conflict and division. In this undertaking, the author attempted to analyze the methods of proper dialogue and debate by reference to Quranic verses and traditional Islamic narratives. The author also tried to identify and propose strategies that can be applied to satellite TV debates byevaluating and criticizing them with a descriptive-analytical approach.
